STEWART MOUNTAIN LODGE - THE PLACE TO BE FOR BEAR WATCHING IN BC 250 636 2640
Stewart, BC and Hyder, AK are only 3 kilometers apart and offer a wonderful experience viewing Grizzly bears, and black bears catching Salmon in the clear waters of Fish Creek and Marx Creek. As of July 2007 there is now a day user fee to access the Bear viewing platform of approximatley $5 or a 3 day pass is $10, and Summer season pass is $80. Many other animals can be seen around the Bear viewing platform. Stewart Mountain Lodge is located only a few minutes away from this world class wildlife viewing facility. Photographers use our knowledge of the areas inhabidants to catch the action as it happens, and get that once in a lifetime shot. opportunities within easy driving distance of Stewart, British Columbia and
Hyder, Alaska. Access: Drive North of Hyder for 4 miles (6.4 km) along the Salmon
River Road. Parking for the observation site is located just past the Fish Creek
bridge.
US Forest Service Fish Creek Page Access: Drive north of Hyder for 4.25 miles (6.8 km) along the Salmon
River Road to where the trailhead is located on the right hand side.
US Forest Service Titan Trail Page Access: When leaving Stewart on Highway 37A cross the Bear River and
take the first right towards the Stewart garbage dump. Follow the signs to the
trailhead. Access: The trailhead begins off of Highway 37A, across from the B.C.
Ministry of Highways service yard, in the town of Stewart. Access: Drive north from Stewart along Highway 37A for approximately
13 km. After crossing the Bitter Creek bridge take the first right. Turn left at
the first junction and follow the road, keeping to the right for another 1 km. Access: Drive North from Stewart along Highway 37A for approximately
13 km. After crossing the Bitter Creek bridge take the first right. Turn left at
the first junction and follow the road, keeping to the right for another 1 km.
From the Clements Lake Recreation Site follow the old road for 300 meters to the
trailhead. Note: The road is un-passable by vehicles 200 meters past the
recreation site. Access: Drive North from Stewart along Highway 37A for approximately
22 km. After crossing the Bear River bridge take the second left onto a steep
gravel road. Follow the road, keeping to the right for 300 meters until you
reach the trailhead.

Hiking and Other Recreational Opportunities in the Stewart Area
Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site (Alaska)

Site description: The location provides excellent opportunities to view
black and grizzly bears during the months of July and August as they feed on
salmon. The site is day use only, no camping is permitted. Ranger programs are
given in the evenings during June, July and August.![]()
Titan Trail (Alaska)
Trail description: A moderate to difficult 4.8 mile (7.7 km) climb that
follows an old mule trail which accesses the historic Titan Mine site. The
trail, built in 1922, also provided access to several other mineral claims in
the area.![]()
Sluice Box/Barney's Gulch Trail
Trail description: A short moderate hike that follows the original
railway bed leading out of Stewart and then turns right, climbing up along the
historic sluice box trail, to a viewpoint overlooking the town of Stewart and
the Portland Canal.![]()
United Empire Loyalist Trail
Trail description: A short moderate hike that follows along the Bear
River then climbs to a viewpoint overlooking the Bear River Valley and Stewart.
Beyond the viewpoint an un-maintained, rough and difficult route continues
climbing to the site of the old United Empire Loyalist mine.![]()
Clements Lake Recreation Site
Site Description: Clements Lake offers good opportunities for picnicking
(five tables), canoeing, camping and a sandy beach for swimming. Motor
restrictions apply on the lake. The site is maintained May to October.![]()
Ore Mountain Trail
Trail description: A moderate to difficult 3.5 km trail that leads to a
viewpoint overlooking the Bear River Valley. A rough, marked route continues
past tree line to alpine.![]()
American Creek Trail
Trail description: A short historic mining trail that follows along
American Creek. The trail terminates after 4 km at Champion Creek.![]()
